Before you go

Fees, access, and what people get wrong here.

  1. The last six to seven miles are washboard dirt road. Passable in a sedan, slow and rough in any vehicle.
  2. The Forest Service trailhead is free. Do not confuse it with Peralta Regional Park, a separate county park nearby that does charge.
  3. The lot fills before sunrise on winter weekends.
  4. This is the single busiest access point into the wilderness. Go on a weekday if you want the saddle to yourself.
